Tempered glass undergoes high-temperature processing and can withstand temperatures up to approximately 230°C. However, the temperature of a freshly boiled clay pot is too high to be placed directly on tempered glass.
Due to the presence of minute nickel sulfide inclusions within the glass, some of these inclusions undergo crystalline changes over time following heat treatment. This expansion can cause micro-cracks within the glass, potentially leading to spontaneous shattering of the tempered glass. Additionally, tempered glass inherently possesses internal stresses during production. Improper installation or usage that causes surface stresses to exceed certain thresholds can also trigger breakage.
